Buying used stainless-steel tanks and kettles

Process tanks and jacketed kettles hold, heat, cool and mix liquids and pastes in food, cosmetic, chemical and pharmaceutical plants. Used stainless-steel vessels are among the most cost-effective second-hand purchases, provided they match the duty.

Specifications that decide fit

  • Material (304 or 316L stainless steel) and internal surface finish, which matter for cleanability and product compatibility.
  • Working volume, and the vessel and jacket pressure ratings for heating with steam or cooling with glycol.
  • Agitation: anchor, scraped-surface or twin-motion agitators for viscous products, propeller mixers for thin liquids.
  • Connections, outlet valve, CIP spray devices and whether the vessel is insulated.

Condition checks

  • Interior surfaces and welds free of pitting, dents or discolouration.
  • Jacket tested for leaks; insulation dry and intact.
  • Agitator drive, seals and scraper blades in good order.

Documents to ask for

Ask for the nameplate data, jacket and vessel pressure ratings, material certificates and drawings. For pressure-rated jackets, check the certification required in your country.

Questions buyers ask

Is 304 stainless steel good enough, or do I need 316L?

304 is fine for many foods and non-corrosive products. Choose 316L for chlorides, acidic products and most pharmaceutical applications.

What does a twin-motion kettle do?

It combines a slow scraper agitator that keeps product moving off the heated wall with a counter-rotating mixer, which suits thick, heat-sensitive products such as sauces and creams.

Can a used tank be modified?

Nozzles, legs and agitators can usually be added or changed by a qualified fabricator; changes to a pressure-rated vessel or jacket require recertification.
