Buying guides

Buying a used tablet coater or coating pan

Tablet coaters apply film or sugar coatings to tablets. Modern machines use a perforated rotating drum with process air drawn through the tablet bed; older conventional coating pans are still used for sugar coating and small batches.

Specifications that decide fit

  • Working batch range of the drum (minimum and maximum load), which should cover your batch sizes.
  • Fully or partially perforated drum, and whether the drum is exchangeable for different batch sizes.
  • Air handling: inlet air capacity, heating and dehumidification, and the exhaust or dust-collection system.
  • Spray system: number of guns, pumps and the solution preparation equipment included.

Condition checks

  • Drum perforations clean and undamaged, baffles complete and secure.
  • Seals and inflatable door gaskets intact; drive and bearings quiet under rotation.
  • Washing system (WIP) complete if the coater has one, and controls able to record process parameters.

Documents to ask for

Ask for the manual, P&ID or air-handling layout, electrical drawings and any IQ/OQ documents. Check whether the separate air-handling unit and exhaust are part of the sale: a coater without them needs additional investment.

Questions buyers ask

Does a used coater come with its air-handling unit?

Not always. Many coaters are installed with separate inlet and exhaust air units. Confirm what is included before comparing prices.

Can one coater handle different batch sizes?

Within its working range, yes. Some machines accept exchangeable drums for a wider range; outside the range, coating uniformity suffers.

Are conventional coating pans still used?

Yes, mainly for sugar coating, confectionery and small batches. For film coating, perforated pan coaters give more uniform results and faster drying.
