Buying guides

Buying used industrial mixers and dispersers

Industrial mixers range from high-speed dispersers that break up powders in liquids, to planetary and double-planetary mixers for thick pastes, to high-shear mixers and homogenisers for emulsions. The right type depends on viscosity and the result you need.

Specifications that decide fit

  • Product viscosity and batch size, which set the mixer type, motor power and vessel volume.
  • Tooling: disperser blades, planetary blades, high-speed dispersers on multi-shaft mixers, or rotor-stator heads.
  • Vacuum and jacketed vessels for de-aeration and temperature control, and how many change cans are included.
  • Explosion protection (ATEX) if you mix flammable solvents.

Condition checks

  • Gearbox and drive quiet under load, with no oil leaks into the product zone.
  • Blades, scrapers and rotor-stator gaps within tolerance; shafts straight.
  • Lift, seals and vacuum system working; variable-speed drive functioning across its range.

Documents to ask for

Ask for the manual, motor and drive data, vessel pressure or vacuum ratings and, for hazardous areas, the ATEX certification of the complete machine.

Questions buyers ask

Disperser or planetary mixer: which do I need?

High-speed dispersers suit low to medium viscosity products and wetting powders into liquids. Planetary mixers handle very high viscosity pastes that a disperser cannot move.

Why use a vacuum mixer?

Mixing under vacuum removes entrained air, which matters for adhesives, sealants, creams and other products where bubbles affect quality.

Can I use a non-ATEX mixer with solvents?

Not in a classified hazardous area. The motor, controls and the machine as a whole must be certified for the zone.
