Buying used lab refrigerators, freezers and incubators

Laboratory refrigerators, ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers and incubators store samples and grow cultures under controlled conditions. Because samples depend on them, temperature performance and alarms matter more than appearance.

Specifications that decide fit

  • Temperature range: +2 to +8 °C refrigerators, −20 or −30 °C freezers, −80 °C ULT freezers; for incubators, temperature and CO2 control.
  • Capacity in litres, number of shelves or racks, and upright or chest design.
  • Alarms and data: high and low temperature alarms, door alarms, remote alarm contacts and data logging.
  • Electrical supply and refrigerant type, which affect installation and future servicing.

Condition checks

  • Pull-down test: the unit should reach its set temperature within the manufacturer's stated time.
  • Door gaskets intact, no ice build-up from leaking seals, and compressor noise normal.
  • Incubators: CO2 sensor and humidity pan working; interior free of corrosion.

Documents to ask for

Ask for the manual and any temperature-mapping or calibration records. For GMP or clinical use, plan a new mapping study after installation.

Questions buyers ask

How do I check a used ULT freezer before relying on it?

Let it run empty to −80 °C, verify the pull-down time and stability with an independent probe, and test the alarms before loading samples.

Do used incubators need recalibration?

Yes. Calibrate the temperature and CO2 sensors after installation, and replace the CO2 sensor or HEPA filter if they are near the end of their service life.

What is temperature mapping?

A study that measures temperature at several points inside the unit to prove uniformity. It is usually required when the unit stores GMP materials.
