Buying guides

Buying a used freeze dryer (lyophilizer)

Freeze dryers (lyophilizers) remove water from frozen products by sublimation under vacuum. Used units range from laboratory benchtop models to production lyophilizers with steam sterilisation and automatic loading.

Specifications that decide fit

  • Usable shelf area and number of shelves, which set the batch size in vials or trays.
  • Condenser capacity (kilograms of ice) and minimum condenser temperature.
  • Shelf temperature range, and whether the dryer has stoppering for vials.
  • Sterilisation (SIP) and cleaning (CIP) for pharmaceutical production units.

Condition checks

  • Vacuum leak-rate test and ultimate vacuum within specification.
  • Refrigeration system reaching its rated condenser and shelf temperatures; refrigerant type still serviceable.
  • Chamber, shelves and hydraulic stoppering system clean and undamaged.

Documents to ask for

Ask for the manual, P&ID, control software and licences, and any IQ/OQ, leak-rate and shelf-mapping records. Check whether older refrigerants can still be legally serviced in your country.

Questions buyers ask

How do I size a freeze dryer?

Start from your batch: the number of vials or trays sets the shelf area, and the amount of water to remove per batch sets the condenser capacity.

Can an older freeze dryer be upgraded?

Often yes. Control systems, vacuum pumps and refrigeration units are commonly retrofitted to extend the life of a sound chamber and condenser.

What matters most when inspecting a used lyophilizer?

Vacuum integrity and refrigeration performance. A good leak-rate test and reaching rated temperatures show that the core systems are sound.
