Chillers operate on the principle of vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles. In a vapor-compression chiller, a refrigerant circulates through four main components: the evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the liquid in the evaporator, is compressed to a high-pressure gas, releases heat in the condenser, and then expands to a low-pressure liquid to repeat the cycle. Absorption chillers, on the other hand, use a heat source, such as natural gas or waste heat, to drive the refrigeration cycle, making them suitable for applications where electricity is limited or expensive. Chillers are categorized into air-cooled and water-cooled types. Air-cooled chillers use ambient air to dissipate heat, while water-cooled chillers use a cooling tower or other water source. The choice between them depends on factors like energy efficiency, installation space, and environmental conditions.
