Chillers are cooling systems used to remove heat from liquids, typically water or a water-glycol solution, which is then circulated through heat exchangers to cool air or equipment. They are essential in various applications, including air conditioning for large buildings, industrial processes, and refrigeration. Chillers operate on the principle of vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles. In a vapor-compression chiller, a refrigerant circulates through four main components: the evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the liquid in the evaporator, is compressed to a high-pressure gas, releases heat in the condenser, and then expands to a low-pressure liquid to repeat the cycle. Absorption chillers, on the other hand, use a heat source, such as natural gas or waste heat, to drive the refrigeration cycle, making them suitable for applications where electricity is limited or expensive. Chillers are categorized into air-cooled and water-cooled types. Air-cooled chillers use ambient air to dissipate heat, while water-cooled chillers use a cooling tower or other water source. The choice between them depends on factors like energy efficiency, installation space, and environmental conditions.
